The summer of 1987 brought notable players in Italian championship: Vincenzo Scifo (for Internazionale), Ian Rush (Juventus), Ruud Gullit and Marco van Basten (Milan). Napoli started better than rivals, leading the group after five matches. Inter and Juventus, en fact, had several issues.

Reigning champions retained top-place in autumn and winter, not meeting obstacles. In spring times Napoli, however, got a slower step: it was useful to help Milan's comeback, with Rossoneri able to recover a good amount of points. Head-to-head match, played on 1 May 1988, smiled to Northern side that reported a 3–2 win. Milan then got just two points but – for his chance – Napoli resulted worse losing both matches. It led to Milan's 11th title and its first since 1979.

This season was the last with 16 teams playing, as two relegations and four promotions from Serie B caused, starting 1988–89, the presence of 18 clubs.
